Bruising of the eyelids and torso

Ecchymoses

Bruising of the eyelids and upper torso has been observed in some amyloidosis patients. This is a result of microscopic vessels rupturing after being made fragile by the amyloidosis. These ruptures can sometimes cause small haemorrhages. This type of bruising is called ‘purpura’. This bruising of the eyelids is random but generally happens when patients wake up in the morning. It can also be caused by rubbing the eyelids with the fingers or removing makeup. In some cases, the vascular damage can be due to dermal damage, also called ‘Bullous Amyloidosis’.
